Who links, solo bass, flamingoes and Melbourne Conservatorium?
Who am I and what are my qualifications?
So… I’m Finn Baulch, I started playing when I was 10 years old, (1999).
I had lessons all through high school. I did Cert 1 of music production in 2006, started teaching professionally for G4 Guitar School in 2007, completed an Associate Degree from JMC academy in 2011, I helped students get past year 12 music at Northmead Creative And Performing Arts School in Sydney 2012-2015, I also studied at a flamenco guitar college – Carmen de las Cuevas in Spain in 2015, I earned my Diploma from Melbourne Conservatorium specialising in flamenco guitar 2019, Bachelor of Music from Melbourne Conservatorium specialising in Composition 2021. I have worked for many schools, shops and taught privately the whole way.
How Twenty-four years of playing made my life better.
No doubt you have already seen articles on the benefits of learning music and advancements in other areas like maths. I won’t restate what you can easily google. I thought it might be more interesting to tell you what learning music has done to my life.
My guitar gave me identity at age 10. At age 12, it gave me something to show off with. Thinking I was good at guitar gave me confidence. Having divorced parents, my guitar became family to me. It was always there for me when I didn’t understand what the adults were doing and saying.
Certain things in maths became obvious, I didn’t see the connection at the time, but I still have my year 8 report card when my maths grades went from a D to an A+, I was learning classical guitar at that time.
As a teenager, listening and playing music got me through all of the teen angst, and in hindsight, those hours and hours of practice time kept me out of trouble.
Playing is my therapy. Learning how music works has helped me to appreciate the music I hear in my day-to-day life. Sound brings me an immense level of pleasure, when most just hear background music. I want to share this with as many people as I can.
Who links music theory, decapitated guitars and kid’s smiles?
Hi, Dylan here. I started learning guitar at the age of 6 with my father, learning to play country and bluegrass music. At the age of 7, I started on my first of 12 years of guitar lessons where I learnt many different contemporary styles of playing, and most importantly, how to adapt to the music I was playing. I attended Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School, where my skills were fostered and developed. After High-school, I was lucky enough to work as a session musician, and play in jazz, metal, rock and blues bands. At the same time I started teaching guitar and bass. At 21 I attended the Australian Institute of Music, doing my bachelors of composition, and production. Around the same time, I started working in various studios and as a live sound engineer.I aim to create individualised lessons to my students, using methods from Gordons Music Learning Theory and Kodály, giving each student a holistic ear first learning experience to meet their musical goals. |
